Theme Park
Lake Compounce, located in Bristol and Southington, Connecticut, is the oldest continuously operating amusement park in North America, having opened in 1846.
It originally began as a picnic park with swimming, boating, and lakeside concerts after Gad Norton was inspired by a large crowd from a failed explosives experiment held by a scientist. Over the years, the park evolved by adding classic attractions such as a hand-powered revolving swing, bowling alley, Connecticut’s first carousel in 1911, and the Green Dragon, the first electric roller coaster in 1914, which was replaced by the still-operating wooden Wildcat coaster in 1927.
The park flourished through the mid-20th century as a family destination but faced financial difficulties in the 1980s and early 1990s. In 1996, Kennywood Entertainment purchased the park and invested significantly in new rides and expansions, including the famed Boulder Dash wooden roller coaster, which has been recognized as one of the best in the world.
Today, Lake Compounce offers a blend of vintage charm and modern thrills with over 50 rides, a large water park, live shows, and a broad range of entertainment options, remaining a popular year-round family destination.
