Park
Lake June in Winter Scrub Preserve State Park is a quiet 845-acre wilderness preserve on Florida's Lake Wales Ridge, seven miles southwest of Lake Placid, protecting the state's most endangered sand scrub habitat along the western shore of Lake June in Winter.
This ancient dune ecosystem—one of North America's highest concentrations of rare species—hosts Florida scrub-jays, scrub lizards, Florida mice, gopher tortoises, Eastern indigo snakes, bobcats, black bears, white-tailed deer, ospreys, and bald eagles amid scrubby flatwoods, bayheads, pygmy trees like scrub hickory and fringe trees, and delicate ferns.
Visitors pay a $2 vehicle fee for access from 8 a.m. to sunset, enjoying a short Tomoka nature trail along a fern-lined stream, the longer 3.5-mile Bobcat Trail on white sugar sand fire lanes for hiking and birdwatching, lakeshore fishing, lightweight canoe or kayak launches, and a shaded picnic shelter with vault toilets, though drones, ATVs, plant removal, and off-trail wandering are prohibited to safeguard this fragile, remote botanical gem.
