Park
Oliver Lee Memorial State Park is a 640-acre desert oasis at the mouth of Dog Canyon in the Sacramento Mountains foothills near Alamogordo, New Mexico, at about 4,400 feet elevation in Otero County.
Named for rancher Oliver Milton Lee who homesteaded there in 1893, it preserves his rebuilt 19th-century ranch house—currently closed for renovations—a cactus garden, visitor center with geologic and cultural exhibits, and a flowing stream amid mesquite, ocotillo, yucca, and wildlife like Texas horned lizards, birds, salamanders, and toads.
Visitors enjoy a 44-site rocky campground with electric hookups, showers, restrooms, dump station, group shelters, picnicking, and trails including the challenging 5.2-mile Dog Canyon Trail and easier nature paths for hiking and wildlife viewing.
