Redcliffe Plantation State Historic Site in Beech Island, South Carolina, preserves the 1859 Greek Revival mansion built for South Carolina governor James Henry Hammond on 369 acres overlooking the Savannah River valley, home to three generations of his family and hundreds of enslaved African Americans like the Henleys and Goodwins.
Listed on the National Register of Historic Places and part of the Reconstruction Era National Historic Network, it features intact 1857 slave cabins, magnolia-lined avenues planted in 1861, heirloom gardens, and exhibits exploring antebellum cotton wealth, slavery's injustices, sharecropping, and Reconstruction-era transitions through 1975.
Donated to the state in 1973 by Hammond descendant John Shaw Billings, the site offers guided mansion tours, self-guided grounds walks, special events, and picnic areas highlighting both white planter power and Black resilience.
