Sesquicentennial State Park

Sesquicentennial State Park, South Carolina, United States

Park

Sesquicentennial State Park, known as Sesqui, spans 1,419 acres in northeast Columbia, South Carolina, in the Sandhills region with a 30-acre lake built by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in the 1930s as part of the New Deal during Columbia's 1936 sesquicentennial celebration.

Originally home to Native American tribes like the Congaree and Catawba, then plantations with enslaved African Americans producing turpentine and crops, it opened as a whites-only park in 1940 before desegregating in the 1960s amid civil rights struggles that briefly closed South Carolina's entire park system.

Today it offers 12 miles of hiking and biking trails, 78 campsites, five primitive sites, a splash pad, picnic shelters, dog park, ropes course, meeting facilities for groups, kayaking, fishing, and programs uncovering its layered Indigenous, plantation, CCC, and civil rights history.
