Woods Bay State Natural Area, spanning 1,590 acres near Olanta in South Carolina's coastal plain, protects one of the largest intact Carolina Bays—elliptical depressions of mysterious origin filled with diverse habitats like cypress-tupelo swamps, marshes, sandhills, oak-hickory forests, and shrub bogs teeming with over 75 species of mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and 150+ birds including alligators.
Registered as a Heritage Trust Site in 1981, it offers a 1,150-foot boardwalk through the swamp for alligator spotting, a three-quarter-mile nature trail around a historic mill pond with remnants of old grist mills and a cotton gin, a one-mile canoe trail past the bays, shoreline fishing for bream, crappie, and pickerel, hiking, and photography in this unique ecosystem 75 miles inland.
