Wyoming Territorial Prison State Historic Site, Wyoming, United States

Historical Place Museum

The Wyoming Territorial Prison State Historic Site near Laramie, Wyoming, was built in 1872 and served as a federal penitentiary until 1890, after which it became Wyoming’s first state prison until 1901.

During its operation, it housed over 1,000 inmates, including notorious outlaws like Butch Cassidy. The prison was known for strict rules following the Auburn Prison System, emphasizing silence, hard labor, and discipline, with punishments including solitary confinement in dark cells. After closing as a prison in 1903, the site was used by the University of Wyoming as an agricultural experiment station until 1989.

The prison was restored and opened to the public as a historic site in 1991, featuring the original prison building, the Prison Industries Building where inmates made brooms, and the warden’s house. The site, now a state historic park, offers tours, exhibits about prison life and rehabilitation, a nature trail along the Big Laramie River, picnic areas, and a visitor center with a gift shop.

It stands as a significant historical landmark that tells the story of Wyoming’s early penal history and territorial days.

Definitely worth the stop. Allow a couple of hours. Reasonable admission. Far more to see here than I expected.

Very interesting people have stayed here. The renovations are amazing. They still make brooms. We spent about two hours but had to leave as they were closing.
