Historical Place
The Bridge of Flowers in Shelburne Falls, Massachusetts, was originally built in 1908 as a trolley bridge to carry freight across the Deerfield River.
When trolley traffic ceased in 1927, the bridge became neglected and overgrown with weeds. Rather than being demolished, the bridge was transformed into a floral garden in 1929, inspired by Antoinette Burnham's idea to replace the weeds with flowers, a project supported by the local Women’s Club who helped raise funds and volunteer labor. Today, the bridge spans about 400 feet and features a spectacular array of over 500 varieties of flowers, vines, and shrubs that bloom seasonally from spring to fall.
It serves as a scenic, pedestrian-only walkway and a unique horticultural landmark, maintained by volunteers and professionals, embodying a creative reuse of infrastructure with historic charm. Regular restoration efforts have preserved both its structural integrity and botanical beauty.
