Bridge
Echo Bridge is a historic masonry arch bridge spanning the Charles River between Needham and Newton Upper Falls, Massachusetts, built in 1876-1877 as part of the Sudbury Aqueduct system to carry water from Lake Cochituate to Boston.
At the time of its completion, it was the second longest masonry arch bridge in the United States. The bridge stretches about 475 feet long, featuring seven granite arches, with its main arch spanning 137 feet and rising about 70 feet above the river. Echo Bridge is located in the picturesque Hemlock Gorge Reservation, where visitors can enjoy walking trails and two viewing platforms—one on top of the bridge and another at the riverbank that is famous for the remarkable echo effect created by the river's natural acoustics.
Though it was originally a vital water supply conduit, it is now maintained as an emergency backup and a historic landmark, recognized on the National Register of Historic Places and as an American Water Landmark. Its combination of engineering significance, natural beauty, and unique echo phenomenon makes it a cherished local landmark and a destination for both history
