Reservoir
Sudbury Reservoir is a large emergency‑backup water supply for the Boston metropolitan area, covering about 2.02 square miles in Middlesex and Worcester counties, mostly in the towns of Southborough and Marlborough with smaller portions in Westborough and Framingham.
Created by the construction of the Sudbury Dam on the Stony Brook branch of the Sudbury River, it was excavated between 1894 and 1898 and holds roughly 7–8 billion gallons of water, serving as a reserve behind the region’s main sources such as the Quabbin and Wachusett reservoirs.
Around 5,000 acres of the watershed are managed by the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation, providing limited public recreation such as hiking and fishing under strict rules to protect the drinking‑water supply for about 2.7 million people.
