Fort Fetterman Historic Site

Fort Fetterman Historic Site, Wyoming, United States

Park

Fort Fetterman State Historic Site, located 8 miles northwest of Douglas, Wyoming on bluffs overlooking the North Platte River, preserves remnants of a key U.S. Army post established on July 19, 1867 as a supply base during the Indian Wars, named for Captain William J. Fetterman killed the prior year near Fort Phil Kearny. Built by the 4th Infantry after Fort Caspar's abandonment, it became the northernmost Wyoming outpost post-1868 Treaty of Fort Laramie, staging General George Crook's 1876 Powder River Expeditions against Cheyenne and Lakota Sioux—including the Battles of Rosebud and Powder River—before abandonment in 1882 as conflicts subsided. Now a Wyoming State Historic Site with restored officers' quarters museum, six original adobe buildings, and interpretive trails amid the later rowdy cowtown era, it offers insights into frontier military life and Plains Indian resistance.
