National Reserve
Waquoit Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve is a 2,700‑ to 2,800‑acre protected area on the south shore of Cape Cod, in the towns of Falmouth and Mashpee, Massachusetts, where fresh water from rivers and groundwater mixes with salty ocean water to form a shallow bay ecosystem.
The reserve includes open waters, salt and freshwater marshes, barrier beaches, sand dunes, forests, and several small ponds and the Quashnet River, providing habitat for fishes, shellfish, birds such as piping plovers and osprey, and many other coastal species.
Jointly managed by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation, it focuses on long‑term research, monitoring of coastal pollution and climate effects, and hands‑on education programs, with walking trails, a visitor center, and opportunities for kayaking that let the public explore its diverse habitats while helping to protect this typical Cape Cod estuary.
