Brook Farm Historic Site, Massachusetts, United States

Park

Brook Farm Historic Site is a 179-acre National Historic Landmark in Boston's West Roxbury neighborhood, Massachusetts, preserving the landscape of a 1841-1847 Transcendentalist utopian commune founded by George Ripley and visited by figures like Nathaniel Hawthorne, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and Margaret Fuller. Originally Massachusett Native land with 5,000 years of habitation, it later served as farmland, a Civil War training camp called Camp Andrew, a Lutheran orphanage from 1871-1943, and a children's treatment center until 1974 before state acquisition in 1988. Now managed by the Department of Conservation and Recreation, the site features rolling fields, woodlands, wetlands, foundations of lost buildings like the Hive phalanstery, walking trails for hiking and picnicking amid wildlife, and periodic guided tours interpreting its layered history as a Boston and National Register landmark.
