Mohawk Trail State Forest is a roughly 6,000‑ to 7,700‑acre state forest in northwestern Massachusetts, straddling the towns of Charlemont, Hawley, and Savoy along the scenic Mohawk Trail (Route 2).
It sits on a rugged landscape of mountain ridges, deep river gorges, and cool‑climate woodlands at elevations from about 600 to 2,080 feet, with a rare, sizable tract of old‑growth forest including hemlocks and other trees that reach several hundred years in age.
Managed by the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation, the forest offers a campground, tall‑pine cabins, and miles of trails for hiking, horseback riding, cross‑country skiing, and snowmobiling, plus access to the Deerfield River and Cold River gorges, making it one of the most visually striking woodland areas in the state.
