Quincy Quarries Reservation is a 22-acre public recreation area in Quincy, Massachusetts, commemorating the birthplace of America's large-scale granite quarrying industry and the Granite Railway, the nation's first railroad built in 1826 to transport stone for the Bunker Hill Monument.
Once active quarries that closed in the 1960s and posed dangers from cliff diving—resulting in numerous fatalities—the site was acquired by the state in 1985 and filled with Big Dig soil in the late 1990s to enhance safety, reopening in 2003 with new rock faces for climbing.
Now managed by the Department of Conservation and Recreation, it connects to Blue Hills Reservation trails for hiking, picnicking, and skyline views of Boston, featuring colorful graffiti, granite ledges, wetlands, and a pond while prohibiting swimming.
